Check out all the vital information that you need to know by clicking on the SEASIDE-FM HRM Storm Central Icon (below)
Tropical warnings are matched with corresponding public wind  warnings for gusts between 90 and 110 km/h. Gusts of this speed Could cause tree branches and limbs to break and some trees to come  down. That could result in downed utility lines and related power  failures. There could also be some damage to signage, roofing  materials and building cladding. Gusts possibly to 130 km/h remain a  concern which could exacerbate these impacts.

HRP Re-Introduces 'Operation Fall-Back'

It's that time of year again when Halifax Regional Police launches its 'Operation Fall-Back' campaign in an effort to reduce noise complaints, property damage and public intoxication in the residential areas surrounding our universities.

The campaign, which was created several years ago in response to concerns raised by citizens, will commence the evening of September 3 and run for throughout the month of September. Halifax Regional Police continues to work closely with community groups, university officials and student representatives to help prevent a repeat of problems from previous years through education and enforcement. HRP is utilizing increased high-visibility patrols and directed enforcement in known complaint areas.

Like the last few years, the partnership will evolve into a dedicated patrol program beginning in October when 'Operation Fall-Back' has concluded. Halifax Regional Police provides the cruiser and Dalhousie University pays the staffing costs for two officers who patrol designated neighbourhoods around Dal and King's campuses at peak times on selected dates throughout the year.

RCMP Urge Safety as Hurricane Earl Approaches

Halifax, Nova Scotia, September 2, 2010...With Hurricane Earl continuing to track toward our province, the RCMP urge citizens to be mindful of the dangers that the storm may present.

As the storm approaches, it is important to remember that extreme weather will result in hazardous conditions, decreased visibility and possible hydro-planing on our road and highways. Drivers may also encounter wind-blown debris on the road and sudden flooding which can be dangerous for motorists and detrimental to highway conditions.  The RCMP encourage the public to keep the roads clear for emergency vehicles and refrain from unnecessary travel until after the storm has passed and clean-up efforts are complete. If you must travel, allow for additional travel time, let someone know your destination, slow down, watch for pooling water and use your hazard signals if you must stop along the way.

The RCMP encourage the public to maintain a safe viewing distance along beaches and shorelines, well away from the water’s edge and stay completely off rocks, breakwaters, and piers where waves are breaking. Storm driven waves and tides can cause unpredictable and deadly conditions as anyone close to the coast could be swept into the ocean.

For further information on emergency preparedness, visit the Nova Scotia Emergency Management Office Web site http://emo.gov.ns.ca/.

Candles pose danger during power outages: Halifax Regional Fire and

(Thursday, September 2, 2010) - With the potential for storm conditions and power outages this weekend, Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency would like to
remind residents not to use candles during a power outage.

Battery powered lighting will provide much more light during a power outage and is not a fire hazard, making it a much safer choice.  Do you know where
your flashlights are?  Do they have charged batteries?

Also, take this opportunity to check your smoke alarms to ensure they are working and have extra batteries on hand. Only WORKING smoke alarms can warn
you and your family of smoke or fire during an emergency.

Should the power to your home be interrupted during the storm and you use a portable generator as a temporary power supply, please remember to place the generator outside in a well ventilated area to avoid poisonous exhaust fumes from entering your home or building.
